Match Report
England and Australia had clearly been the best two teams in their respective pool, although Ireland challenged England all the way for top spot.
Played as the final match at the World Cup in front of a packed house with many of the other countries in to watch, the atmosphere was fantastic for the Over 40's final.
It was clear from the outset that England's opposition research had been very good, as they had worked out how Australia liked to play the game and had formulated a plan to nullify their fast style of play. In the 7th minute, Tejinder Hanspal added to his World Cup tally with a field goal to hand England an early advantage.
Australia struggled to gain any ascendancy but their defense held strong until midway through the third quarter when Paul Nixon scrambled in a field goal to double England's lead.
The talk in the three-quarter time huddle was fairly simple, leave nothing in the tank! Fired up, Australian was rewarded with a penalty stroke midway through the final quarter that was converted by Matthew Hotchkis and gave Australia hope. Then, with 90 seconds to go, a defensive hit was blasted down the right-hand sideline and penetrated the England midfield onto the stick of Matthew Hotchkis who beat two defenders, took a push in the back and blasted the ball into the roof of the net as he was falling to equalise. England's protests were waved away by the umpire and the match finished 2-2.
Sadly for Australia, England emerged victorious 3-1 in the shoot-out to claim the gold medal and complete the set of winning all four age groups (Men's and Women's 35's and 40's) at this World Cup.
Congratulations to England on the gold medal and also to Australia for a fantastic tournament. Let the partying begin!
