Match Report
Arriving in Christchurch 5 days prior to the championships in order to complete a training camp, the Australian 35's came into the competition as well prepared as possible. New Zealand had suffered a blow during their final training match with one of their key attacking weapons ruled out after breaking his arm late in that match.
Despite being held in late autumn, the Christchurch weather had played nice and the match was played in a very pleasant 20C.
Australia stated well with Daniel Edge grabbing a field goal in the 7thminute. New Zealand earned a penalty corner mid-way through the 1st quarter, and Australia won 2 penalty corners late in the quarter, but none of these troubled the scorer.
Muddassir Abbas started the second quarter well for Australia with a hard fought field goal, but New Zealand immediately responded with a field goal to Brad MacLeod. Australia successfully defended two penalty corners late in the half but were unable to deny Mike Jeffcoact who grabbed a field goal to see the teams finish the half tied at 2-2.
From that point on, New Zealand dominated the match. A field goal to Phil Hook early in the third quarter and another to Lu Khani right on the final siren saw New Zealand take a 2-4 win. Australia's only positives in the second half were 2 penalty corners, one in each quarter.
All and all, having led 2-0, it was a disappointing match for Australia. A video review session highlighted a number of things that needed to be worked on, both individually and as a team.
The team goes into the second match positive they can perform much better.
