Match Report
Coming into the match on one win a piece, both teams were keen to take out the Trans-Tasman bragging rights. Australian had already won the Trans-Tasman trophy, but New Zealand were keen to grab a win for their men who had lost all other age groups to Australia.
Mark Matheson had arranged with the Tournament Director for players of both teams to have their children accompany them on the pitch for the playing of the national anthems. This was a risky move, as several players started the match misty eyed but the joy exhibited by players and supporters from both sides far outweighed the tears on display. Players and their families will remember the moment for a long time to come!
Australia couldn't have started the match any better with Chris Reid scoring a field goal in the first 20 seconds. Two penalty corners in the first quarter were also earned by Australia, with Sam McCambridge scoring from the second of them.
One of the key aspects of the match was the robust nature of the New Zealand tackling. Several Australian players hit the turf as a result of strong tackles. The second quarter was most memorable for Ian McHugh getting a stick to the head and spending most of it on the bench having a gash in his scalp stitched and glued. New Zealand earned a penalty corner and Australia two, but neither team was able to score from them. Australia rounded out the second quarter with a field goal from Theo Gruschka to go into half time 3-0 up.
The third quarter was a lacklustre affair, with neither team showing any attacking flare.
New Zealand dominated the fourth quarter. They scored a field goal from the stick of Lloyd McLoughlin and Ben Molloy scored from the first of their two penalty corners of the quarter. Australia were forced to spend much of the final 3 minutes defending with 10 men after Ian McHugh earned the ire of the umpires. New Zealand won a second penalty corner but Australia was able to defuse it.
The elation on the faces of the Australian players when the final siren sounded was evident. New Zealand was gallant in defeat but their disappointment was obvious.
Congratulations to the team on a fantastic tournament!
