Christchurch

Known as the Garden City, Christchurch (Māori: Ōtautahi) is the second largest city in New Zealand (Māori: Aotearoa) and the largest in the South Island.

In recent years, the city has been the scene of two major devastating events - the 2011 earthquakes and the 2019 terrorist attack. These events have re-shaped the city, both physically and emotionally.

Home to the Canterbury Crusaders, the most successful Super Rugby franchise in history, the region boasts many attractions ranging from wineries to the Antarctic base.

Public
Transport

From the Airport

Your two best options to get from the airport into Christchurch city is either a taxi/ride-share or public Transport.

Taking public transport, you need to take a # 3 or # 29 bus from the airport. Either of these buses will drop you at the bus interchange in the centre of the city.

Like most international airports, the taxi and ride-share options from the airport are numerous. Note, in New Zealand, taxi and ride-share costs are comparable to Australia if not slightly more expensive.

Around Town

Like most modern cities, Christchurch’s public transport uses a smart card. A Metrocard gives you at least 25% off the fare price. The card costs NZ$10 to purchase and requires a minumum top up of NZ$10.

To buy your Metrocard go to one of the many Metrocard agents, such as libraries, the Bus Interchange, and Northlands Shopping Centre. Remember to bring a valid ID so they can issue you a card. You then top up your balance either online by creating an account on the Metrocard website, face-to-face at the Bus Interchange or any Metro agent, or through the bus driver as you board the bus.
